Remote diagnostic assessments

Remote diagnostic assessments are available to eligible clients who prefer to complete the assessment online. This can be helpful for university students, adults, employees, or families who live outside Lancashire, have transport difficulties, or would prefer to be assessed from home.

A remote assessment follows the same professional principles as a face-to-face assessment. It includes background information, standardised assessment tasks, professional interpretation, a diagnostic decision where appropriate, a written report, and feedback on next steps.

The suitability for remote assessment will be checked before booking. In some cases, a face-to-face assessment may be recommended if this is likely to provide a more reliable or appropriate assessment experience.

Who is remote assessment suitable for?

Remote assessment may be suitable for:

  • adults seeking a dyslexia diagnosis

  • university students applying for Disabled Students’ Allowance

  • apprentices or employees seeking workplace support

  • young people from Year 9 upwards, where an appropriate adult can support the setup

  • clients who live outside Lancashire

  • clients who find travel difficult

  • clients who prefer to complete the assessment from a familiar environment

Remote assessment may not be suitable where:

  • the client does not have access to a quiet private room

  • internet access is unreliable

  • the client cannot use a suitable laptop or desktop device

  • there are significant concerns about attention, fatigue, anxiety, vision, hearing, safeguarding or test validity

  • the assessment requires activities that are better completed in person

What you need for a remote assessment

To complete a remote diagnostic assessment, you will usually need:

  • a laptop or desktop computer with a camera and microphone

  • a stable internet connection

  • a quiet, private room

  • a desk or table

  • pen and paper

  • access to email before and after the assessment

  • a phone nearby in case of connection difficulties

  • for young people, an appropriate adult available nearby for technical support

Mobile phones are not usually suitable as the primary device for remote diagnostic assessment because their screen size and setup may affect the assessment process.
